Hammond

Finished rooms for Hammond homes, from people who live this too.

Hammond is home turf for us. We know the bungalows, the brick two-family homes, and the challenge of finding a contractor who actually shows up. Ascendesign brings design and build together — with crews we've already vetted.

Building here

Housing stock: Hammond is an older industrial city on Lake County's northern edge, bordering Chicago and Lake Michigan, with neighborhoods such as Robertsdale, Hessville and Woodmar. Much of its housing is early- to mid-20th-century single-family homes — many bungalows and Cape Cods — plus two-family homes. Downtown, along Hohman Avenue, historic mid-rise buildings stand alongside the bungalows — including the nine-story former Bank Calumet tower (1925), Hammond's tallest building, now converted to apartments as The Banc. Typical projects: Kitchen and bath remodels, basement finishing, whole-home refreshes, light commercial. [PLACEHOLDER — confirm]

Permitting: Permits here are issued by the City of Hammond Building Division (Inspections Department), 5925 Calumet Ave. Hammond requires contractors and subcontractors working in the city to be registered with the city, and licensed contractors must obtain permits for work over $300; applications need a plat or sketch and plans/specifications. We handle permit applications and inspection scheduling as part of the project. [CONFIRM current requirements with the department before each job]

Questions we hear

Do contractors need to be registered in Hammond?

Yes. The City of Hammond requires any contractor, sub-contractor, or specialty contractor working within city limits to be registered with the city. We confirm registration for every trade on your project.

Who pulls the permits?

We pull the required permits with the City of Hammond Building Division for work we contract, and coordinate inspections.

How do you choose the crews who work on my home?

We vet every contractor. Some jobs take 60–80 bids because many don't call back, don't show up, aren't insured, or are booked months out. We screen for insurance before anyone is put on your project.
